Globe Telecom has begun deploying 5G millimeter wave technology across the Philippines in partnership with Nokia, marking the first commercial rollout of this high-frequency spectrum in the country. The deployment utilizes Nokia’s Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) system combined with Wi-Fi 7 capabilities to deliver fiber-like speeds without physical cable infrastructure.

Field tests conducted at the Marine Battalion Landing Team-1 headquarters in Naval Station Rio Hondo in Zamboanga City demonstrated the technology’s potential for remote and challenging environments. The trials recorded download speeds of 4.3 Gbps at a distance of 2.1 kilometers from the base station. A second test conducted nearly 9 kilometers away still achieved speeds approaching 1 Gbps.

The Philippine Marines represent the first government users of the mmWave deployment, utilizing the network to strengthen connectivity for national security and public service operations. “We are grateful to Globe, our long-time partner, for continuously supporting the Marine Battalion Landing Team-1 with reliable communications solutions,” said Lt. Col. Nepthalie C. Papa, commanding officer of Marine Battalion Landing Team-1. “Through Globe’s commitment to innovation, we have strengthened our connectivity even in the most challenging environments.”

Globe has activated early mmWave installations in Zamboanga City, Quezon City, and parts of Rizal province. The carrier plans to expand the deployment as more mmWave-compatible devices become available in the market.

“The success of our 5G mmWave and Wi-Fi 7 deployment with the Philippine Marines proves that advanced connectivity can transform mission-critical operations,” said Gerhard Tan, Globe’s senior director and head of technology strategy and innovations. “Beyond defense, this technology lays the groundwork for a truly digital and connected Philippines.”

Globe identified several potential applications for the mmWave technology beyond military use. The carrier sees opportunities in enterprise operations, government communications, and fixed wireless broadband delivery in areas where deploying fiber optic cables remains impractical or cost-prohibitive. The technology could also support private 5G networks for industrial automation and secure business operations that require high-speed, low-latency connectivity.
