Riedel Communications deployed its Easy5G private network and RefCam Live referee camera system during the Bundesliga match between FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund at Munich’s Allianz Arena in April. The project marked the first integration of these technologies in a packed stadium environment with 75,000 spectators during Der Klassiker, one of German football’s most prestigious fixtures.
The Deutsche Fussball Liga (DFL) initiated the project to explore technologies that could enhance fan experiences and provide new perspectives on live sports coverage. The Easy5G network became operational in under one hour using a single base station to cover the playing field and tunnel areas without requiring extensive pre-existing stadium infrastructure.
The RefCam Live system delivered 1080p50 video streams from the referee’s perspective throughout the match. The camera was mounted at eye level on Riedel’s RUN headset, while a Bolero S beltpack handled referee communications and a RefCam Live beltpack managed video streaming to the broadcast compound. All equipment was integrated under the referee’s jersey to avoid match interference.
“The DFL approached us with a clear vision to redefine live coverage with cutting-edge connectivity and immersive capture,” said Jacqueline Voss, executive director strategy and innovation of Riedel’s Managed Technology division. “They were determined to test our solutions on the biggest stage possible, and we delivered. With just one Easy5G base station, we achieved full coverage of the pitch and tunnel – the system performed flawlessly.”
Riedel’s Managed Technology division handled system setup, frequency management, remote access capabilities, and on-site support for match officials. The company also implemented Wi-Fi-based video preview in areas outside 5G coverage, such as the referee’s locker room, enabling seamless pre-match setup.
“At the DFL, we are constantly looking to enhance the fan experience within our media products and lead the way in innovation,” said Dominik Scholler, VP product management and innovation at DFL. “This deployment marks a significant step in exploring how next-generation technologies like 5G and body-worn cameras can bring viewers closer to the game than ever before.”
