‘Telcos may rejig their 5G enterprise business plans’

Kolkata & Mumbai: Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) may refocus their planned 5G enterprise business to focus on medium-sized corporates for new revenue streams with expected competition from large corporates and tech majors who could enter the fray for captive private networks using the next gen technology, say analysts.

The government has recently allowed direct spectrum allotments to independent companies for setting up captive 5G networks, which is likely to drive large enterprises and tech companies to take the plunge.

Big enterprises with direct access to 5G airwaves will rely less on telcos to build/manage their captive networks. Enterprise services were estimated to garner as much as 40% of future 5G revenues for telcos, an outlook that telcos will desperately look to protect with revenue from 5G expected to be mainly driven by B2B, not so much by retail subscribers.

Private 5G networks: Telcos' demand for level playing field absurd and impractical, say tech companies

BIF said that the suggestion that private networks should not be given spectrum in bands which are possible for telcos to use for offering services is also unjustified, as the telcos’ businesses depend on economies of scale, while that of enterprise businesses having private networks does not. The spectrum that is earmarked for private networks needs to be exclusive and distinct from those bands for Public 5G, to avoid needless possibilities of interference between the two networks.

“What is certain is that 5G will not sell with a simple price argument,” the findings said. “Indian enterprises demand good value, but that is equated with good quality. If Indian enterprises want to buy into 5G, it is specifically because it is expected to address what has held them back digitally and deliver a rock-solid platform on which to run their business operations, empower employees and partners, and delight customers.”
