Toyota Material Handling Transforms Operations with Ericsson Private 5G

Forklift Private LTE and 5G

Vertical: Manufacturing

Application: Industry 4.0

Ecosystem:  Ericsson

Private Network: 5G

Toyota Material Handling, a leader in the forklift and material handling equipment industry, has partnered with Ericsson to implement a private 5G network at one of their production facilities in Columbus, Indiana. This private network is enabling major improvements in productivity, efficiency, and safety.

Potential capabilities enabled by 5G connectivity span augmented reality, advanced automation, artificial intelligence, HD video analytics, and real-time sensor monitoring. This promises significant advancements in quality assurance, productivity, efficiency, and safety for smart factories.

Toyota Material Handling has upgraded the wireless connectivity at one of its large warehouse facilities. They have adopted Ericsson’s private 5G network solutions, including the indoor-focused Radio Dot System, to replace previous Wi-Fi infrastructure.

The private 5G network covers the entire 200,000-square-foot facility using CBRS spectrum allocated for the localized cellular network. Since going live in November 2023, Toyota Material Handling management has reported smooth, disruption-free usage for business-critical warehouse operations.

“The early benefits already being highlighted by Toyota Material Handling show the immediate impact a private 5G network can have on operations, employees, and customers. At Ericsson, we understand the importance of a strong, resilient, and secure network for businesses investing in Industry 4.0 best practices. Toyota Material Handling is at the forefront of Industry 4.0 innovation, and we’re excited to see how our private 5G solutions are already having a positive effect,” said Manish Tiwari, Head of Private Cellular Networks, Ericsson Business Area Enterprise Wireless Solution.

The Toyota Material Handling and Ericsson private 5G project serves as an exciting proof-of-concept for the potential of 5G in industrial environments. As networks expand globally over the coming years, early initiatives like this one will provide valuable models for utilizing 5G to revolutionize manufacturing operations.
