Private 5G Powers JLR's Smart Factory Evolution Private LTE and 5G

Vertical: Manufacturing

Application: AGVs, IoT sensors, vision systems, production tools, condition monitoring

Ecosystem:  Ericsson, Fujitsu

Private Network: 5G

Jaguar Land Rover has embarked on a major technological upgrade at its Solihull manufacturing facility, implementing a private 5G network that is already delivering significant operational improvements. The luxury automaker faced growing limitations with its traditional wired networks and unreliable Wi-Fi infrastructure, particularly in challenging environments like its five-floor paint shop where connectivity had been virtually nonexistent.

The decision to adopt private 5G came after JLR’s manufacturing team discovered potential solutions at Hannover Messe. Working with Ericsson and Fujitsu, JLR deployed a robust private 5G network that achieves speeds up to 900Mbps, providing consistent coverage throughout the facility’s metal and concrete structures.

This wireless infrastructure now supports critical manufacturing applications, from vision systems to IoT sensors, enabling real-time data collection and analysis. Maintenance and production managers use DataOps platforms like Litmus to translate this steady stream of information into operational improvements. The network’s flexibility allows quick replacement and configuration of connected tools, minimizing production line downtime.

The implementation has been particularly impactful in previously disconnected areas like the paint shop, where data had been trapped in static computers within industrial machines. This newfound connectivity supports JLR’s broader Industry 4.0 initiatives, including the deployment of automated guided vehicles and advanced production tools.

“Ericsson Private 5G provides a robust foundation for a connected, agile, and data-driven manufacturing environment. This positions us to enhance automation, digitalization, safety, and sustainability across our operations,” said Stephen Mason, Product Manager, Manufacturing, Global IT at JLR.

Following the success at Solihull, JLR is considering similar implementations at other facilities, including its plant in Slovakia. The project represents a significant step forward in modern automotive manufacturing, demonstrating how private 5G networks can overcome traditional industrial connectivity challenges while supporting future technological innovations.
