Connected Underground: How MTC’s Private LTE Network Is Reshaping Mining at Rössing

Private LTE and 5G Mining

Vertical: Mining

Application: Mobile voice communications, high-speed data connectivity, operational coordination, real-time decision support

Ecosystem:  MTC

Private Network: LTE

Namibian telecommunications operator MTC has formally handed over a dedicated private LTE network to Rössing Uranium, marking a significant step in the modernisation of the mine’s operations.

The deployment brings four new LTE sites to the Rössing site, expanding coverage to deliver reliable mobile voice services and fast data connectivity across key operational areas.

Mining environments have grown steadily more complex, and the demand for connectivity that keeps pace with that complexity has never been greater. A private LTE network purpose-built for the site enables teams to coordinate more effectively, act on information faster, and integrate the digital tools that support smarter, more responsive day-to-day operations.

At the network’s inauguration, MTC Managing Director Dr Licky Erastus articulated what the initiative means in practice, “This project is about improving how people connect and work on the ground. It is an enabler of safer, smarter, and more efficient mining operations. By bringing reliable, high-performance communication into complex industrial environments, we are empowering teams with the tools they need to make better decisions in real time and operate with greater confidence.”

Rössing Uranium Managing Director Johan Coetzee added important context, noting that modern mining is not solely defined by heavy machinery, blasting, hauling, and demanding physical labour — it is equally dependent on continuous access to accurate, real-time data.

For Namibia, the deployment carries weight beyond a single mine. As the country works to strengthen its position in a globally competitive mining sector, investments in site-specific digital infrastructure like this private LTE network are expected to play a defining role in where the industry heads next.
