Paper and packaging manufacturer Hamburger Containerboard has partnered with Deutsche Telekom to install one of Europe’s largest private 5G campus networks at its facility in Spremberg, Germany. The sprawling network, covering an area equivalent to 50 soccer fields, boasts more than 120 antennas that deliver standalone 5G connectivity across 350,000 square meters of indoor and outdoor spaces.

The sheer scale of this private 5G network is a testament to Hamburger Containerboard’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to optimize its operations. With an annual production capacity of 840,000 tons of paper, the Spremberg facility is set to benefit greatly from the enhanced connectivity and capabilities provided by the 5G network.

According to Klaus Werner, Managing Director of Business Customers at Telekom Deutschland, the network “meets particularly high security requirements and supports functions important to the industry such as network slicing and ultra-low latency.” These features are crucial for enabling the manufacturer to implement advanced use cases and streamline its processes.

Initially, the 5G network will be utilized to connect scanners and forklifts, facilitating the tracking of spare parts and improving document management. However, the potential applications extend far beyond these initial use cases. Hamburger Containerboard plans to deploy IoT sensors for real-time monitoring and control of production and maintenance processes, as well as explore the implementation of automated guided vehicle systems.
