Vertical: Manufacturing

Application: Video analytics

Private Network: 5G

The Hitachi Astemo Americas plant in Berea, Kentucky, with aid from AWS and Ericsson, has deployed a private 5G network to help with operational optimization. The system will use AI and edge technologies for a state-of-the-art video analytics system at the electric motor vehicle manufacturing plant. Cameras will focus on and provide data to spot product line defects automatically. The real-time 4K-video feed allows defects smaller than a millimeter to be detected, allowing AI and machine learning based algorithms to quickly spot flaws. The system can watch 24 assembly operations at the same time.

“The combination of private 5G, cloud, and artificial intelligence/machine learning automated technologies has the potential to revolutionize the way we manufacture products, and we are excited to be at the forefront of this innovation,” said Sudhanshu Gaur, VP of R&D for Hitachi America and chief architect at Hitachi Astemo Americas.

The private 5G network could be used in the future for other applications including augmented reality, robotics automation, and real-time machine control.

“The best news about this collaboration is that it is not about capabilities that will be available at some distant point in the future. These solutions can be deployed today in manufacturing and enterprise environments to deliver a range of early adopter competitive advantages,” said Thomas Noren, head of PCN commercial and operations at Ericsson.
