Hong Kong’s Smart City Revolution: NTT Launches First Private 5G Innovation Lab

Hong Kong Private LTE and 5G

Vertical: Smart City

Application: Innovation lab

Ecosystem:  NTT

Private Network: 5G

In a move set to supercharge Hong Kong’s smart city ambitions, NTT Com Asia has unveiled the docomo 5G DX Square, the city’s first innovation lab powered by a localized private 5G network. This initiative marks a significant milestone in Hong Kong’s technological landscape, offering a high-performance sandbox for local innovators to develop cutting-edge AI, edge computing, and private 5G applications.

Key Highlights:

  • NTT Com Asia is the first service provider to receive the Localized Wireless Broadband System (Private) License from Hong Kong’s Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA).
  • The docomo 5G DX Square serves as a vibrant ecosystem where startups, enterprises, academics, and local vendors can converge to rapidly prototype and test their ideas.
  • Built on the latest millimeter wave standalone technology, the private 5G network offers ultra-low latency, high bandwidth, and massive connectivity.
  • The lab enables the development of ready-to-deploy IoT solutions across various sectors, including construction, manufacturing, healthcare, and transportation.

Unlike public 5G networks, NTT’s private 5G solution offers a dedicated, highly secure, and customizable connectivity tailored to the unique demands of smart city use cases. This allows for the development of mission-critical applications that require fast data transfer speeds, ultra-low latency, and massive connectivity.

Stephen Tsang, Chief Revenue Officer of NTT Com Asia, emphasized the significance of this launch: “[It] accelerates 5G adoption in Hong Kong and catalyzes entirely new industries and possibilities, cementing Hong Kong’s status as a leading technology and innovation hub in the region.”

Beyond infrastructure, the docomo 5G DX Square provides innovators with access to valuable resources, expertise, and partnership opportunities. Participants can leverage NTT’s vast commercial knowledge, learn from successful business cases, and receive direct feedback from potential customers, significantly accelerating their time to market.
