Huawei Helps Power the World’s Largest Utility with 5G

China Private LTE and 5G

Vertical: Utilities

Application: Electric power, load control, distribution automation

Ecosystem:  China Unicom, Huawei, State Grid, TD Tech

Private Network: 5G

China’s State Grid, the world’s largest utility company, has developed a new private 5G network solution in collaboration with partners China Unicom, and Huawei. This solution aims to utilize 5G connectivity to enable advanced monitoring, analytics, automation, and other smart grid capabilities across State Grid’s extensive electrical infrastructure.

Specific use cases that this 5G rollout aims to enable include real-time telemetry collection from grid assets, predictive and proactive equipment maintenance based on AI, as well as optimized power distribution leveraging algorithmic insights. The extremely low latency offered by 5G could also allow remote control of equipment to react instantaneously to faults or fluctuations.

As utilities worldwide look to leverage next-generation connectivity technologies like 5G to upgrade their grid infrastructure, State Grid’s ambitious smart grid solution highlights relevant possibilities. Building dedicated, purpose-built 5G networks can provide the speed, scale and reliability required for managing mission-critical national power infrastructure.

The solution won the 2024 GLOMO award in the category of “Best Private Network Solution.” Sven Zhu, Marketing Vice President of Huawei Wireless Solutions, remarked: “We are very grateful to be recognized by GSMA for our inclusive 5G smart power grid solution. Huawei will continue to work with operators and partners to stimulate 5G application innovation and expand digital and intelligent transformation across industries.”
