Africa-focused telecommunications operator Paratus Group has launched Namibia’s first privately operated mobile network, directly challenging state-owned incumbents MTC and Telecom Namibia. The deployment introduces competition to a market where MTC has maintained dominance with over two million subscribers since 1994.
The launch coincides with Paratus Namibia’s 20th anniversary of operations in the country. Since 2018, Paratus has invested NAD1.42 billion (approximately $80 million) into Namibian network infrastructure, with NAD600 million allocated specifically for the mobile network rollout in 2024.
Nokia serves as the network infrastructure partner, while Cerillion provides the digital technology platform. One-third of the NAD600 million investment was dedicated to building a digital technology stack that integrates all Paratus services into a single customer-centric platform.
The network operates exclusively on 4G LTE technology with 5G capabilities, bypassing 2G and 3G infrastructure entirely. This approach aligns with regional modernization trends, including South Africa’s planned shutdown of 2G and 3G networks by December 2027.
“Connectivity is the backbone of economic growth. Launching Namibia’s first private mobile network is a deliberate step in our mission to transform Africa’s digital landscape. By offering transparent, affordable services, we’re removing barriers and empowering more people to participate in the digital economy,” stated Paratus Group CEO Schalk Erasmus.
The mobile network offers VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling services, integrating with Paratus’s existing fiber and wireless infrastructure to create a unified connectivity ecosystem. The company targets younger, tech-savvy demographics with transparent and affordable data and voice packages.
Paratus operates across 15 African countries with what it calls “Africa’s quality network” – a contiguous infrastructure spanning the continent. The group’s network includes the Paratus Express Route, powered by the Equiano subsea cable, providing optimized international connectivity from Johannesburg to Europe and the United States.
“This launch marks a defining moment in our journey: a full mobile service going live across Namibia. We’re not just launching a product; we’re challenging the status quo,” Erasmus added.
The deployment introduces the first private competition in Namibia’s mobile sector, potentially setting a precedent for similar developments across the region as African telecommunications markets embrace private sector participation and infrastructure modernization.
