Telefónica Partners with Microsoft to Incorporate Generative AI into Kernel

Spanish telecommunications giant Telefónica announced a partnership with Microsoft this week to bring the capabilities of generative artificial intelligence (AI) to its Kernel 2.0 innovation platform. Kernel is an open innovation ecosystem launched by Telefónica in 2017. Telefónica’s Kernel is the backbone digital platform enabling the company’s development of new digital products and services. As the foundation of Telefónica’s digital ecosystem, Kernel has four key pillars – identity management, data management, application development, and privacy. It offers unified customer data and payment APIs to efficiently build apps, services, platforms, and channels.

Mobile Network Operators Continually Adding Technologies

The insatiable data appetites of today’s smartphone users push mobile carriers onto a relentless technology upgrade treadmill. Engineering teams continually test and deploy infrastructure advancements to cost-effectively expand network capacity. Technology innovations come rapidly as carriers seek a competitive edge in meeting the skyrocketing demands.

The mobile infrastructure evolution introduces new equipment, protocols, and techniques. Massive MIMO brings cellular base stations with dozens of tiny antennas for targeted transmission. Telefónica is working with Microsoft to extend Kernel workflows through Azure AI Studio, Microsoft’s platform for building and deploying generative solutions. This integration will enable Telefónica’s data scientists to access Kernel’s digital capabilities in a frictionless and privacy-compliant manner.
