Telefónica Partners with Microsoft to Incorporate Generative AI into Kernel

Generative AI Private LTE and 5G

Spanish telecommunications giant Telefónica announced a partnership with Microsoft this week to bring the capabilities of generative artificial intelligence (AI) to its Kernel 2.0 innovation platform. Kernel is an open innovation ecosystem launched by Telefónica in 2017. Telefónica’s Kernel is the backbone digital platform enabling the company’s development of new digital products and services. As the foundation of Telefónica’s digital ecosystem, Kernel has four key pillars – identity management, data management, application development, and privacy. It offers unified customer data and payment APIs to efficiently build apps, services, platforms, and channels.

Mobile Network Operators Continually Adding Technologies

The insatiable data appetites of today’s smartphone users push mobile carriers onto a relentless technology upgrade treadmill. Engineering teams continually test and deploy infrastructure advancements to cost-effectively expand network capacity. Technology innovations come rapidly as carriers seek a competitive edge in meeting the skyrocketing demands.

The mobile infrastructure evolution introduces new equipment, protocols, and techniques. Massive MIMO brings cellular base stations with dozens of tiny antennas for targeted transmission. Small cell sites multiplied everywhere densify networks for optimal reuse of spectrum frequencies. Carrier aggregation combines fragmented spectrum bands into wider channels. Networks upgrade to new generations to support quicker user equipment handoffs between cell towers. Behind the scenes, mobile core networks transform into software-defined virtual infrastructures to rapidly scale.

On the horizon, the 5G vision relies on deploying millions of small antennas close together on existing infrastructure. Engineers continue working out the physics to make the most of limited radio spectrum real estate. In the race to meet today’s network needs, 5G remains years from mass adoption.

The demand cycle keeps these technology upgrades continuous. Carriers must keep networks ahead of subscriber usage levels to maintain performance. By the time they fully implement the latest tech acronym, planners already have their sights set on what comes next. In Telefonica’s case, it’s generative AI.

Generative AI in Telecom

Generative AI holds tremendous promise for advancing mobile networking. Natural language processing models could automatically generate code for configuring and optimizing network components. Generative design AI could invent new resource allocation algorithms, radio access architectures, and dynamic spectrum sharing techniques to maximize throughput. Telefónica is working with Microsoft to extend Kernel workflows through Azure AI Studio, Microsoft’s platform for building and deploying generative solutions. This integration will enable Telefónica’s data scientists to access Kernel’s digital capabilities in a frictionless and privacy-compliant manner.

“AI is opening tremendous new growth opportunities for operators. Telefonica’s integration of generative AI into Kernel is a prime example of this – by creating a centralized AI platform, they will be able to drive full business transformation and apply AI at scale to every function in the organization,” said Jason Zander, EVP, Strategic Missions and Technologies at Microsoft.

Conclusion

Telefónica’s partnership with Microsoft marks a milestone in harnessing the power of generative AI to transform business innovation. By incorporating generative capabilities into Kernel, Telefónica strengthens its digital platform, enabling agile development of AI-powered products and services. This builds upon Kernel’s existing data, identity, and privacy management foundations – key enablers for trusted and ethical AI implementations. Meanwhile, mobile carriers like Telefónica continually adopt cutting-edge infrastructural technologies like 5G to manage the exponential growth in network data demands. The integration of Azure AI paves the way for Telefónica to leverage generative models to optimize its own networking operations through automated infrastructure improvements and customer service innovations. Telefónica is poised to emerge as a leader in leveraging trustworthy approaches to AI to benefit both business and society.
