Application: Live camera feeds, wireless contribution, real-time monitoring and recording

Ecosystem:  Nokia, Digita

Private Network: 5G

Finland’s public broadcaster Yle recently conducted a pilot program to evaluate how a dedicated 5G network could support its studio operations. The trial deployed wireless camera equipment alongside the broadcaster’s existing production methods on the set of the music entertainment program “Elämäni Biisi,” allowing the team to assess performance metrics including latency, mobility, and overall workflow efficiency.

Digita, the tower and network operator, built the private network infrastructure using technology from Nokia. Live video feeds from the wireless camera were transmitted over the 5G system for both monitoring purposes and recording, enabling Yle to evaluate image quality consistency and how the setup might improve production flexibility compared to traditional wired approaches.

According to Olli Sipilä, Head of Distribution Technology at Yle, “Wireless solutions bring freedom and flexibility to programme production. With 5G, we can transmit high-quality video, which is critical for live broadcasts.” Sipilä also noted that Yle has been exploring mobile network technology for broadcast contribution for years, with a substantial portion of the company’s field production signals now relying on broadband connectivity rather than dedicated lines.

The three organizations confirmed that the pilot achieved its goals and demonstrated the viability of private 5G networks for broadcast production environments. Moving forward, Yle, Digita, and Nokia plan to continue their work together to identify additional production scenarios where dedicated 5G connectivity could provide significant value and to explore how the technology might scale within Yle’s operations.
