Private Wireless Network Powers Port Operations at Husky Terminal

Husky Terminal Private 5G

Vertical: Seaports

Application: Yard truck monitoring, terminal operating system connectivity

Ecosystem:  Nokia

Private Network: LTE, CBRS

Husky Terminal & Stevedoring has implemented a comprehensive Nokia private wireless network at their Port of Tacoma facility in Washington state, replacing their previous Wi-Fi infrastructure with a more robust solution that provides complete coverage across their 115-acre terminal, including areas filled with metal containers stacked as high as 18 meters.

The deployment demonstrates how maritime shipping facilities can modernize their operations through strategic technology investments. According to Husky Terminal’s operators, “The deployment of secure, low latency private wireless connectivity allows us to concentrate on reinventing marine freight operations using innovative digital technologies to exceed customer expectations.”

This implementation enables Husky Terminal to monitor approximately 40 yard trucks that are now connected to the network. More importantly, it establishes a foundation for additional operational improvements, with the terminal actively exploring further use cases that leverage private wireless connectivity.

David de Lancelloti, vice president of Enterprise Campus Edge Business at Nokia, emphasized that industrial-grade Nokia private wireless networks serve as the foundation for digital transformation journeys at ports. “We worked in close collaboration with Husky Terminal to design and deliver a private 4.9G/LTE network that satisfied their need for robust reliable connectivity,” he noted.

“The industrial-grade Nokia DAC digitalization platform will be critical as Husky Terminal evolves its modernization plans at the Port of Tacoma,” de Lancelloti added.
