Kajeet has joined forces with strategic partners Druid, Internet2, T-Mobile, and AT&T to deploy a cutting-edge CBRS-based neutral host network at the prestigious University of Virginia (UVA) in Charlottesville. This collaborative effort aims to significantly enhance in-building mobile coverage for UVA’s diverse community of over 25,000 students and faculty.
The challenge was clear: Existing wireless networks struggled to provide consistent, reliable connectivity across UVA’s sprawling campus, with many buildings constructed from materials like metal, concrete, and LEED-certified structures acting as formidable barriers to cellular signals. This hindered the in-building mobile experience for students and staff.
The primary mission was to dramatically improve connectivity quality campus-wide by deploying a neutral host network interconnected through the CBRS spectrum. This endeavor not only seeks to enhance connectivity but also reinforces safety measures and unlocks opportunities for cutting-edge academic innovation.
To achieve this ambitious goal, a Neutral Host Network (NHN) model was implemented, involving a mutually beneficial radio access network (RAN)-sharing agreement between mobile operators and UVA. Kajeet’s Private 5G network seamlessly integrated into the university’s existing infrastructure, establishing a robust connection to Internet2’s upgraded national research and education network.
By harnessing the power of 4G neutral host over CBRS, T-Mobile and AT&T services experienced a significant boost in coverage, even in traditionally challenging areas. This ensures students have uninterrupted mobile connectivity and can make vital emergency calls, bolstering campus safety.
