Nokia and Kyndryl Revolutionize Industrial Connectivity With Dow Corporation’s Private 5G Network

Dow Private LTE and 5G

Vertical: Manufacturing

Application: Enhanced mobility, safety, productivity

Ecosystem:  Nokia, Kyndryl

Private Network: LTE

Dow Corporation, a leader in material science, faced significant connectivity challenges in its vast industrial facilities. For instance, the Freeport site spans 5,000 acres with limited Wi-Fi or public cellular coverage. This lack of pervasive digital communications led to inefficient paper-based processes, time-consuming data entry, and potential errors.

To overcome these obstacles, Dow implemented a private LTE cellular network using CBRS (Citizens Broadband Radio Service) technology. This solution offered several advantages over traditional Wi-Fi. The network could efficiently cover large outdoor areas, providing expanded coverage where it was previously impractical. The implementation costs were significantly lower than alternative technologies, making it a cost-effective choice for large-scale deployment. As well, private LTE provided more stable and reliable connections in challenging industrial environments compared to conventional Wi-Fi solutions.

Dow partnered with Kyndryl Inc. and Nokia to design and implement the network architecture. The solution utilized Nokia Private Cellular LTE hazardous rated devices, ensuring compatibility with the industrial setting.

The private cellular network has had far-reaching effects on Dow’s operations:

  • Enhanced mobility: Workers can now access critical information and systems throughout the facility.
  • Improved safety: Real-time communication and personnel tracking capabilities have been implemented.
  • Operational excellence: The network enables the use of analytics, machine learning, and digital guided procedures.
  • Productivity gains: Employees can work more efficiently with access to digital tools in the field.

Clark Dressen, Dow Corporation global director, emphasized that this network deployment is just the foundation for a wide range of applications. The improved connectivity is expected to drive positive outcomes in operational excellence, cost reduction, workforce productivity, and the development of cognitive-driven business models.
