Enhancing Airport Connectivity: Private 5G Network Deployment at KLIA

Airport Private LTE and 5G

Vertical: Airports

Application: Airport operations, passenger connectivity, IoT integration, autonomous vehicles, baggage handling

Ecosystem:  Digital Nasional Berhad, Edotco Group

Private Network: 5G

Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) and Edotco Group have implemented a private 5G network at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The installation, completed in just two months, spans both KLIA1 and KLIA2 terminals, marking a substantial advancement in airport connectivity solutions.

The new in-building solutions deployment creates a robust digital foundation for both immediate and future applications. For passengers, this means consistently fast and reliable connectivity throughout the terminal buildings. For airport operations, the network enables advanced applications like autonomous buggies and smart baggage handling systems, with the high-speed, low-latency characteristics of 5G supporting real-time operations.

Malaysia Airports CIO Vijay Kumar Dayinde emphasizes how this infrastructure upgrade enhances both operational efficiency and passenger experience. The network’s capabilities extend beyond basic connectivity, supporting an ecosystem of IoT devices and smart sensors that can optimize various airport functions. This comprehensive approach to digital infrastructure positions KLIA as a modern transit hub ready for future technological innovations.

The deployment’s scope is impressive, with Edotco installing 52 in-building connectivity solutions across both terminals and nine 5G outdoor poles covering a 10km x 10km radius around the airport complex. This thorough coverage ensures seamless connectivity throughout the airport ecosystem, from passenger terminals to operational areas.

This installation is part of DNB’s broader strategy to enhance indoor 5G coverage in high-traffic areas across Malaysia. With 73 similar installations already completed at various strategic locations including hospitals and convention centers, DNB is systematically building a comprehensive 5G infrastructure network. The airport deployment aligns with Malaysia’s preparations for its ASEAN chairmanship in 2025, demonstrating the country’s commitment to digital advancement.
