Private Network: 5G

Stanley Robotics has launched a strategic partnership with ORAXIO Telecom Solutions to deploy private 5G technology for their automated parking robots at Lyon Saint Exupéry airport. This collaboration represents a significant advancement in optimizing robot parking systems that have been operating at the airport since their initial deployment.

The private 5G network enables Stanley Robotics to support substantially larger automated parking operations, with the capability to manage up to 100 robots operating simultaneously. This enhanced connectivity addresses critical operational challenges including coverage reliability, remote maintenance capabilities, and flow priority management that are essential for scaling robotic operations.

Aurélien Cord, CTO at Stanley Robotics, explained: “We were looking for solutions to optimize operations and to meet our challenges in terms of performance and scalability of our valet robots. Subjects such as coverage, reliability of connectivity, remote maintenance as well as management of flow priorities are key to allowing us to increase the number of robots on the same site.”

The deployment at Lyon Saint Exupéry represents the world’s first outdoor robotic valet parking service, where autonomous robots named Stan handle vehicle parking operations. The system currently operates 500 parking spaces with four robots working simultaneously, with plans to expand to accommodate up to 2,000 additional spaces.

Private 5G technology provides the ultra-fast, reliable, and secure connectivity required for real-time communication between robots and infrastructure. The network supports basic robotic operations and enables advanced applications including high-definition video surveillance and on-site human location detection systems.

Nicolas Hauswald, President of ORAXIO Telecom Solutions, stated: “Following the comparative analysis of the different technologies, it quickly became apparent at the only one that could provide an immediate supplement to Stanley Robotics’ operations and initial use cases was private 5G.”

The robotic valet system operates through a streamlined process where passengers book parking spaces online and drop off their vehicles in dedicated cabins. The robots then autonomously detect vehicles, slide underneath them, lift them gently by the wheels, and transport them to secure storage areas. Upon passenger return, robots deliver vehicles back to the cabins based on flight itinerary information.

The private 5G-enabled robotic system delivers significant environmental benefits by eliminating passenger vehicle traffic within parking areas and operating on electric motors that produce no direct emissions. Stanley Robotics estimates that approximately 100 tons of CO2 emissions can be avoided annually for 2,000 parking spaces through robot deployment.

The system optimizes space utilization by enabling vehicles to be parked much closer together in secure configurations. This approach increases parking density by up to 50% within existing surface areas, eliminating the need for costly infrastructure expansions while preserving surrounding soil integrity.
