Beira Port Partners with Sedna Africa to Deploy Private Mobile Network for Enhanced Operations

Beira Port in Mozambique is set to receive a comprehensive private mobile network deployment through a partnership between terminal operator Cornelder de Moçambique and South African connectivity provider Sedna Africa. This infrastructure project represents a significant advancement in port modernization efforts across the African continent. 

The deployment addresses critical connectivity challenges that have long hindered digital transformation at African ports. Many major ports across the continent continue to operate on narrowband technologies with severely limited data throughput capabilities, creating bottlenecks for modern industrial operations. 

Anton Fester, Managing Director of Sedna Africa, noted that ” Africa’s ageing infrastructure simply cannot meet the demands of modern industrial use cases — particularly when it comes to connectivity.” The private mobile network solution aims to deliver reliable, high-throughput connectivity essential for safety protocols, automation systems, and productivity enhancements. 

For Sedna Africa, this contract marks a strategic expansion beyond their established mining sector expertise into other heavy industries including ports, manufacturing, and oil and gas operations. The company has previously deployed private LTE networks for major mining operations throughout the region, working with clients such as Anglo American, African Rainbow Minerals, Zimplats, and Sibanye Stillwater. 

The Port of Beira serves as a crucial maritime facility for both Mozambique and several landlocked countries in sub-Saharan Africa, making this network deployment particularly significant for regional trade operations. The deployment will enable advanced monitoring capabilities through integrated sensor technologies that can detect equipment wear, potential failures, and fire risks before they become critical issues. 

This proactive monitoring approach supports enhanced preventative maintenance programs and improved safety protocols throughout port operations. The combination of reliable network connectivity and advanced sensing capabilities creates a foundation for increased automation and digital transformation initiatives. 

The deployment aligns with broader infrastructure modernization efforts across African ports, where digital transformation has been constrained by legacy connectivity limitations. Private mobile networks offer dedicated bandwidth and enhanced security compared to traditional shared network infrastructure, making them particularly suitable for mission-critical industrial applications.
