Marine Corps Gets Private 5G for Advanced Warehouse Operations

 The US Department of Defense is continuing its push to trial private 5G at military bases around the country. The Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, in Georgia, has worked with Federated Wireless to recently trial a private 5G wireless network for smart warehouse automation. The networks will go live in July. The 5G-enabled Internet of Things (IoT) applications running on the network include:

  • Real-time robotics for autonomous vehicles, forklifts, and robots
  • Smart security cameras, able to analyze live and recorded footage to authenticate personnel, track vehicle arrivals and departures, and track assets
  • Connected equipment to help optimize inventory and asset management

Cisco (packet core and security architecture), JMA Wireless (radios), and KPMG (services) are also working on the project with Federated Wireless. The network will use the 3.5 GHz CBRS band and mmWave spectrum.

Dr. Thomas Rondeau, Principal Director for FutureG & 5G for the U.S. Department of Defense, said “Achieving a pre-production, state-of-the-art private 5G network built solely by U.S.-based companies is an important milestone in advancing U.S. 5G competitiveness and gives the U.S. Military a key strategic advantage that can be replicated across mission-critical DoD facilities to accelerate warfighter readiness.”

The DoD allocated $600 million to trial private 5G at bases countrywide to test its capabilities on bases and in the field to modernize the military, looking to improve operational efficiencies across all branches of the military and make the US the leader in 5G technology.

“Our demonstration of these innovative 5G applications and use cases proves the art of the possible and marks a huge leap forward for defense logistics and, ultimately warfighter readiness,” said Kurt Schaubach, Chief Technology Officer of Federated Wireless. “We are excited to begin working with other DoD and military leaders to extend the power of edge computing and private 5G to telehealth, training, facilities security, supply chain optimization, and other mission-critical operations.”

Federated Wireless was chosen as the prime contractor of the project.
